DIRECTOR OF CULTURE & Sustainability

Charli is the Director of Culture & Sustainability at Howlett Brown. Charli has over 12 years of expertise in behavioral psychology and investigations, providing unique support to clients with global operations on crisis-led, safeguarding and culture related issues. Charli advises across every aspect of risk management including response, investigation and remediation. Charli’s practice embeds a trauma-informed and psychological wellbeing methodology to enable safe and sustainable business practices.  

Charli routinely works with in-house counsel and HR functions to support organisations respond to and manage risk associated with safeguarding, crisis and culture. Supporting clients in over 30+ countries, including in hostile and challenging jurisdictions for highly sensitive matters, Charli assesses, advises, conducts and manages matters with sensitivity, recognition of local context, across regulatory, legal and cultural landscapes, which she embeds into her approach to providing tailored advice. Charli’s experience includes:  

  • Led and advised on a complex bullying matter concerning senior managers at a global media and advertising firm, which included trauma-informed interviews with a vulnerable adult and review of working practices connected with poor wellbeing of employees within the function.  
  • Conducted a review of safeguarding practices of a member association in Haiti for an international sport federation following an investigation into sexual exploitation and abuse of minors. This included recommendations concerning weaknesses identified in safeguarding governance.   
  • Led a regulatory investigation into the misuse of personal data and violation of human rights for a UK retail and manufacturing organisation.  
  • Conducted and advised on several investigations across Africa for a multi-national telecommunications company concerning allegations of sexual harassment, exploitation, culture concerns and nepotism.  
  • Co-led a regulatory investigation in East Africa concerning whistleblower disclosures of bribery, corruption, sexual misconduct and racial discrimination, including reporting to international and local regulators, dawn raid, interviews and forensic preservation of company and device data.  

Charli has worked in risk consultancy for over 10 years. Prior to this, Charli spent time working for The Innocence Project, a not-for-profit human rights organisation, conducting investigations relating to a range of convictions including murder, voyeurism, and serious sexual assault. 

Charli holds a BA (double major) in Psychology, Criminology and Criminal Justice from Edith Cowan University, Western Australia. She is also a member of the British Society of Criminology and the Australian Psychological Society.
