HAYLEY COLES – Associate

Hayley Coles has several years’ experience in employment law and HR advice. She has worked extensively on both contentious and advisory issues including employee misconduct, redundancies and restructuring, health and safety, mediating employment disputes and carrying out investigations. She has worked at one of New Zealand’s largest law firms, and also at a medium-size firm.

Hayley was the founding president of the Aotearoa Legal Workers Union, a new union for lawyers and other legal workers in New Zealand, which now has approximately 1000 members. The union aims to advocate for underrepresented groups within the legal profession, to improve culture and practice and to create greater accountability. In that role, she led the executive team and set strategic direction, engaged with media and worked closely with key stakeholders.

Hayley graduated from The University of Auckland with a law honours degree and is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. Prior to moving to New Zealand, she spent 15 years in Kathmandu Nepal where she grew up. She is proficient in Spanish and Nepalese and is currently learning Māori, the indigenous language of New Zealand.
